To promote a forthcoming book on the environment, Broadway Books is sending one American or Canadian teacher on a trip to Antarctica. Robert Swan, author of 2041: My Quest to Save the World’s Last Wilderness, which Broadway will publish in October, is leading the trip, dubbed the 2041 International Antarctic Treaty Expedition, in November. NativeEnergy, which offers services that reduce carbon emissions, is co-sponsoring the contest.

To enter, teachers should submit a 500-word essay explaining why they want to visit Antarctica and how they will pass the skills they learn along to their students. Swan, an environmentalist and polar explorer who was the first person to walk to both the North and South Poles, will lead 80 teachers, students, corporate leaders and environmental experts on a tour of Antarctica’s ecosystems. Participants will travel by ship along the Antarctic’s ice cliffs, follow whales, camp overnight on the Antarctic ice, visit one of the largest gatherings of Gentoo penguins on the continent, and sail past Cape Horn.

Broadway, Swan and Swan’s colleagues at the 2041 initiative will select the contest winner in October, prior to the publication of 2041.
