Book Readings & “Butter Churning”

One of my favorite things to do (besides reffing roller derby) is attending book events.  Helping an author in getting a book “birthed” into the world is always an incredibly satisfying experience.  Seeing an author in front of a crowd of excited readers, as well as future readers (of his/her book) is even better.

Tonight’s book event  at Magers & Quinn Booksellers was exceptional.  Kudos to Wendy McClure, author of The Wilder Life, on a successful book reading! For anyone who hasn’t perused her book, I implore you to take a moment to put this on your reading list.    Especially for those who were equally die-hard fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder during childhood.

From our attempt to churn butter (with a large mason jar), to 3 rounds of Little House on the Prairie trivia, to the discovery there was a gal in the audience who received a letter from Laura Ingalls Wilder (during her childhood), it appeared that the entire crowd enjoyed the evening.

For any aspiring authors, those who have a book in the figurative “birth” canal at a publishing house, or already published writers, Wendy’s event is comprised of the “stuff” that makes book readings noteworthy and memorable.  It should go without saying that it’s absolutely essential the readers are engaged throughout the event, and that even more copies of your book are sold afterwards.

In summary, when planning future book readings,  make sure to avoid “hugging’ that podium.  Make it fun.  Get your readers excited.   Present  your own equivlant of readers “churning the butter.”

In the meantime, enjoy the anime version of Little House on the Prairie.  One of my favorite things learned tonight!  🙂
